Yet another life saved in critical condition with 33 units of blood components

Before we explore a case study of Massive Transfusion happened at Rajkot last week, let’s have a look on the research of WHO. According to the research, every year, in India, around 1 lac pregnant women lose their lives because of excessive bleeding.
A pregnant woman of Rajkot, 25, was saved by the efforts of the doctors and Rajkot Voluntary Blood Bank & Research Centre. She was admitted in a reputed trust-managed hospital of Rajkot. After delivery the patient developed Post-Partum Haemorrhage (PPH) - a post-delivery complication in which uterus remains relaxed and non-contracted resulting in massive blood-loss. The patient also developed Disseminated Intravascular Coagulopathy (DIC) due to excessive blood-loss and she struggled for her life.
Doctors tried hard to save her in this condition. The treating clinician wanted to transfuse blood components for the rise of Hb level. For that doctor asked for 19 units of blood components on 10th May, 2013 from Rajkot Voluntary Blood Bank and Research Centre. After transfusion of these components condition of the patient was stable. The next day her condition worsened and the doctor asked for more units of blood components. During those three days doctors fought hard to save her life and RVBB & RC stood with the doctors to save the patient’s life issuing 33 units of blood components for her.
